Here you’ll find answers to the most commonly asked questions I receive regarding my botanical illustrations. If there is something you want to ask me, however, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Q: What is your creative process?

A: My illustrations usually start life as good old-fashioned pencil on paper. Hand drawing my botanical and animal illustrations is what I am passionate about. I then work in ink, watercolour, gouache, acrylic or pen and fine liners depending on what my client’s needs are. I will work iteratively with you to create the exact illustration(s) you need - from sketch, to sample to finish, with reviews conducted and revisions made every step of the way. All I ever want is for my clients to be happy, it is a collaboration after all.

Q: How much?

A: My fee depends upon the complexity of the illustration. Once I know more about the commission, I can give you a price range. Fees are calculated once I know the client(s) details, the timescale, the usage, the territory, the duration, and the detail of the illustration(s) needed.

Q: What kind of projects to you work on?

A: I have worked on many varied projects and commissions. No two jobs are the same, and I do love a challenge. My most requested work is botanical and animal illustrations for branding and events, but I am also very experienced in textile design, editorial and publishing.

As well as commissions, my illustrations are available to licence. Please get in touch to enquire.

Q: Do you only work on paper?

A: No! Illustration is such a broad and beautiful sector, I have created artwork and painted directly on to 3D sculptures (an example can be found here) as well as created large scale murals for events (another example here). With no two commissions the same, I have been able to work on a very broad spectrum of projects using a very broad spectrum of materials.

Q: So, does that mean you are open to working on unusual briefs and live events?

A: Absolutely! Pop me an email to enquire here. An example of live illustration can be found here, working for Edinburgh Gin.

Q: I have seen a piece of your artwork that I like, but it is only available as a print. Are you able to make it into another product for me?

A: Yes! All products in my online store are ethically and lovingly made to order in Britain. This ensures that there is zero waste and items are limited edition. The additional beauty of this is that I can make you a cushion, tote bag, print, apron or tea towel in any of my designs or illustrations you like at no extra charge. Please note that custom orders like this are non-returnable.

Q: What kind of clients do you work with?

A: I have clients from all over the world, which I am incredibly grateful for. I have worked with large scale global clients, small businesses, individual private commissions, the odd celebrity, and everything in between! Some examples can be found here.

Q: Do you have an agent?

A: I represent my self in all territories bar China, my agent there is Ampersand Globe 艺峰国际 and you can contact: david@ampersandglobe.com.

If you are an agent looking to represent my work please contact me here.

Q: What is your availability?

A: I am ready when you are! Please do not be shy in enquiring, I am always happy to have a chat to see if I can fulfil your botanical and animal illustration/artwork needs. I understand the importance of a budget and pride myself in being able to work to tight deadlines. No one wants to work with someone who is unreliable.
